Dementia friendly community

The dementia friendly Communities Initiative targeted local businesses in order to improve their knowledge of dementia, increase their communication skills and become involved in raising awareness of dementia.

The service addresses the challenge of community awareness on dementia specific issues and the possibility of the people with dementia to maintain an active participation in daily community life. It will improve the experience of people with dementia when accessing the services of local businesses.

Target group

  • Local businesses and shop owners
  • People with dementia living in a community

Description

The service establishes partnership with local businesses and shop owners and provides training and information materials on dementia specific issues in order for the staff to have a better preparedness to meet and interact with people with dementia. The individual shop gets a sign in the window to indicate that this business is dementia friendly.

The service has been free for all interested businesses and been distributed by the local branch of Alzheimer Scotland in close collaboration with NHS Western Isles.
